New Market Research Report: Concentrates in China

From: Fast Market Research, Inc.
Published: Fri Jun 20 2014

An increased number of health-conscious consumers in China have brought in slower growing demand for concentrates as these products are considered synthetic and artificial with high sugar content. In addition, in the review period, some local concentrates products were exposed as having excessive artificial content and mould, which resulted in a negative image of concentrates and made consumers move away from them. Meanwhile, the obese population in China continued to increase and, in particular, a child obesity problem became obvious in the review period. Thus, parents have avoided their children having an excessive sugar intake which has also given rise to a decreasing consumer base for concentrates.

Competitive Landscape

Mondelez China Inc led concentrates in 2013 with a 23% off-trade value share as its iconic brand, Tang, maintained its lead. With a 26% share of off-trade value sales in 2013, the company also led in powder concentrates. Since the flavour of crystal sugar pear has become popular in China, the Tang brand has grasped the opportunity of rapid growth and also introduced this flavour as a new product in response to its popularity. Although the company engaged in product development, some new entrants to powder concentrates still eroded the share held by Tang in the review period. Kraft Foods China Inc completed legal procedures and officially changed its name to Mondelez China Inc as from July 2013.

Industry Prospects

Total value sales of concentrates in China are expected to see a CAGR of 2% at constant 2013 prices over the forecast period. Compared with that of review period, concentrates' CAGR growth is expected to slow down mainly due to strong competition from RTD and other soft drinks. An increasing number of local consumers are likely to continue preferring fruit/vegetable juice rather than concentrates. This is because fruit/vegetable juice offers a wider variety of new products and comes in a more convenient ready-to-drink format.
