Operationally, the UK has continually underlined its ability to both lead and to participate at a high level in major multinational military operations. In recent years, British forces have been deployed to the Mediterranean in support of combined air and sea operations over and around Libya as part of a wider NATO initiative. Moreover, the UK has concluded a deployment to Iraq which has lasted almost two decades and will, in 2014/15, complete a decade long deployment to Afghanistan. At the same time, British deployments of various sizes protect UK interests around the world, and also support United Nations-level peacekeeping operations. The country is also one of the five official acknowledged nuclear powers and retains one of the five permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council.
