Contact Lenses in Japan: New research report available at Fast Market Research

From: Fast Market Research, Inc.
Published: Tue Dec 09 2014

Volume sales of contact lenses continued to increase and were up by 4% in 2014. This was largely influenced by the strong growth in disposable lenses sales, as daily and weekly/ monthly disposable lenses account for the majority of contact lens volume sales. Disposable lenses especially captured the large last-minute rush in demand from late 2013 through the first quarter of 2014. Since Japanís consumption tax increased from 5% to 8% on 1 April 2014, contact lenses users were keen to purchase and stock up on a six- to nine-month supply of contact lenses before the tax increase became effective.

Competitive Landscape

Global leading players continued to maintain their leading positions in contact lenses in Japan. Global players include Johnson & Johnson, Menicon, Ciba Vision, Bausch & Lomb and CooperVision. Combined the sales accounted for 84% of total contact lens sales in 2013. These players built strong presence by covering multiple categories from disposable lenses to traditional and extended wear lenses.

Industry Prospects

Value sales of contact lens are expected to post a CAGR of 2% (at constant 2014 prices) over the forecast period. Although Japanís society is declining, the demand for contact lenses to treat eyesight problems is likely to increase. The ongoing ageing population will increase the number of people with age-related vision conditions. More seniors choose to wear contact lenses to treat presbyopia as they grew up with and are accustomed to wearing contact lenses. The introduction of bifocal and multifocal contact lenses to treat presbyopia by major brands will also support the sales of contact lenses. In the meantime, the younger generation will have more exposure to digital technology including video games, personal computers, tablets and smartphones, which will further contribute to the increasing eyesight problems. Teenagers opt to wear contact lenses as first choices as they do not change a personís appearance. The growing need of contact lenses amongst the younger generation will also maintain the growth of contact lens sales over the forecast period.
