In 2013, dermatologicals continued to post healthy current value growth of 3%, with sales reaching €485 million. This positive performance mainly derived from strong value sales of topical antifungals. In 2013, topical antifungals grew by 4% in current value terms, making it one of the best performing categories. Dermatologicals benefited from German consumers’ positive perception of OTC dermatological products, with many consumers being willing to self-medicate skin problems. Many consumers considered OTC dermatologicals as very effective at treating skin problems such as athlete’s foot or bites and rashes.

Competitive Landscape

Novartis Consumer Health continued to lead dermatologicals in 2013 with a value share of 15%. Novartis is active in dermatologicals through two main brands, namely Fenistil and Lamisil. The leader was closely followed by domestic manufacturer Bayer Vital, which held a value share of 12%. Johnson & Johnson ranked third with a 9% value share. Johnson & Johnson was present with three major brands, namely Terzolin (medicated shampoos), Regaine (hair loss treatments) and Penaten (nappy (diaper) rash treatments).
