Wound Care in Thailand - New Report Available

Demand for wound care witnessed an upward tendency in line with the growing population, encouraging the trial of new offerings with superior features. In Thailand, sticking plasters were originally used for placing on tiny wounds to circumvent infection whereas gauze and tape served to cover large or deep wounds or wounds on a movable part of the body. However, innovation in sticking plaster products has extended to reproduce the attributes of old-fashioned gauze and tape, becoming more convenient. Therefore, the growth of sticking plasters increased at the expense of gauze and tape.

Competitive Landscape

The leadership position in wound care belonged to Jack Chia Industries (Thailand) with 52% value share in 2013, thanks to its long-standing presence and a wide range of renowned brands in both sticking plasters/adhesive bandages and gauze, tape and other wound care in its product portfolio, namely Tensoplast, Tensoplastic, Tigerplast and Pharmacare. 3M Inc continued to rank second with 34% value share in 2013, attributable to its strengths in distinctive innovation and the global reputation of its brands including Nexcare and Neoplast. In addition, 3M Inc was gearing up to pursue more extensive distribution, particularly in chemists/pharmacies, parapharmacies/drugstores and convenience stores nationwide.

Industry Prospects

Wound care is forecast to post the moderate constant value CAGR of 4% to reach nearly Bt587 million in 2018, decreased from the 5% CAGR during the review period. Given the better living quality of Thai consumers with lower risk of injury from routine activities amid the urbanisation trend, the volume consumption of wound care is likely to be in line with the growing population in Thailand. Despite the new product launches with superior features, sales of wound care will benefit primarily from higher value spending rather than an increment in unit consumption.
