Newton Abbot Racecourse has presented Cancer Research UK with the results of their Ladies’ Day race-goers’ generosity where a raffle raised almost £900 to fund breast cancer research by the charity.
Following the afternoon race meeting on August 10th, Eric Ogglesby, local representative for Cancer Research UK, was presented with a cheque for £880. The donation will be used by the charity to fund research studies into breast cancer, one of the most common cancers in the UK which accounts for more than a quarter of all cancers in women.
Cancer Research UK uses the money that they receive to fund research studies throughout the country, including several clinical trials for breast cancer at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital. The charity is the largest single funder of breast cancer research in the UK, last year spending over £44 million on ground breaking work into the disease.
Eric Ogglesby thanked the racecourse and its race-goers for their support: "Each year we raise around £40k locally to fund cancer research studies, however, unfortunately this has fallen in recent years due to the economic climate. We were delighted that Newton Abbot Racecourse chose to support Cancer Research UK and we would like to extend our thanks to the race-goers on Ladies’ Day for their generosity."
Each year Newton Abbot Racecourse chooses to support a number of charities from the numerous requests they receive. In 2010, the racecourse has supported the South Devon Sports Association for the Disabled, Age Concern, the Teignmouth Station of the National Coastwatch Institution, Dartmoor Vale Rotary Club, Action Duchenne and the Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen.
Pat Masterson, Managing Director at the racecourse commented: "We chose to support Cancer Research UK and their research into breast cancer due to the natural synergy with our Ladies’ Day race meeting. We were overwhelmed by the support we received on the day and would once again like to thank everyone who took part in our Ladies’ Day charity raffle."
