Migration from standard feature phones to smartphones continues to increase in Argentina, with volume sales of the latter soaring at a double-digit rate for the fifth consecutive year at 22% whereas feature phones posted a severe contraction of 48%. Smartphones sales are driven by a substantial growth in mobile phones manufactured in Argentina, peaking at more than a 95% share of local supply, and average prices are plummeting as new companies enter the local market fuelled by an increasing penetration rate of 73% of households in 2014 from 13% in 2010. Penetration of feature phones continues to contract, from 74% in 2010 to only 37% in 2014.
Competitive Landscape
Samsung Electronics Argentina led in smartphones with a 36% volume share in 2013 driven by strong new product development, a friendlier OS compared to the previous leader Blackberry, and wide product availability thanks to large investments in local manufacturing after import barriers were imposed in 2011. Also in feature phones Samsung Electronics Argentina takes the lead with a 35% share followed by Nokia Argentina with 22%. The leading position in smartphones helps Samsung Electronics Argentina to gain sales in feature phones as consumers choose the brand with an aspirational bent to familiarize themselves with the operating system before upgrading to a smartphone.

Industry Prospects
Innovation in 4G technologies and high inflow of new product developments will continue to drive demand of smartphones and strengthen the contraction in feature phones, thanks to an increasing demand for replacements leading to a 19% CAGR in volume terms over the forecast period for smartphones and -52% CAGR for feature phones. The advent of 4G technologies, for which the bidding process was opened in early 2014 and which deployment is expected to start by the end of 2015, will improve an already congested 3G network and drive sales of smartphones. Currently due to the saturation of the 3G network, Argentina has one of the worst communication quality reputations in the region after seeing a sharp increase in smartphone sales.
